Jiva Performing Arts & Blue-Skinned God Records proudly present the legendary South Indian percussionist Karaikudi R Mani with special guest four-time Grammy winner Glen Velez and opening Act by award winning Akshara Music Ensemble
This is Karaikudi R. Mani’s first-ever appearance in NYC in his illustrious 60-year career. He is considered to be one of the foremost percussionists hailing from the South Indian Carnatic tradition. With his own percussion driven ensemble, Shruti Laya, he developed a cult-like following among drummers around the world. He received the prestigious national award from Sangeet Natak Academi in 1999.
Glen Velez is a four-time Grammy winning percussionist, vocalist and composer based in the US. He is credited as the musician who popularized the frame drum in the US. Glen Velez has released over 20 albums during his career. This is Glen Velez’s and Karaikudi Man’s first ever collaboration.
Akshara Music Ensemble is a NYC based band founded in 2008 by composer Bala Skandan. Their debut album ‘In Time’ has received rave reviews and is considered one of the best world music albums from 2018.
The event is produced by Aum Shanti Aum Productions (ASAP) in support of the Indian Development Foundation’s Malvani Slums Children Education Fund. Part of the proceeds will be donated to this fund.
